Top 5 Countries

This is a list of the top ten countries I'd love to visit to taste their food, and why!

Canada!

I know this is cheating, but I love the food of my own country. The number one reason I love Canadian food is poutine. Yes, I love greasy french fries smothered in hot beef gravy and a ton of cheese curds on top. The cheesier, the greasier the better!

The other, (more obvious reason!) is Tim Horton's! What Canadian doesn't enjoy a "Timmys" in the morning, whether it's a hot chocolate or a coffee, a donut or their famous Timbits! I'm a bit of an eccentric, drinking their iced capps. in the winter time, but i'm not the only one! Where would we Canadians be without our Timmys, honestly? It's a Canadian privilege that I am in love with.

And don't forget the maple cookies! Those are amazing, words can't even describe. Maple is one of my favourite flavours, and in cookie form? Amazing! And don't forget the Quebec-made Jos. Louis! I'm not sure if anyone could ever resist the light, chocolately taste of a Jos. Louis!

Mexico!

Again, this is a bit of a cheat, since i've already been there, but why not? Mexican food is nice and spicy if you want it to be, which i'm such a fan of! Nothing can compete with that sizzling sensation in your mouth, the intensity of the heat just from the flavour itself! Anything wrapped in a tortilla or with rice, and i'm there! There is still so much of real Mexican food I have yet to try, and I would love to go back again.

Italy!

This is an obvious for me. I love pasta, wholeheartedly. Why not visit the country famous for both? I'd actually love to visit more than just Italy, but that's definitely where I would start. Tomatoes are my favourite vegetable, I love almost anything they're in, and a tomato is an Italian staple! I've never had any Italian desserts, but i'd love to.

                                            China!

I'm guilty of wanting to visit China to see if their 'Chinese food' is the same as ours here. I highly doubt it's as greasy, (Though Canadian Chinese food is still amazing) probably much healthier. The Chiense culture is far different than our own, and I want to see how the food compares!

             India!

India is said to be the land of spices, and that's an exciting concept for me! The culture itself is very colourful, and I imagine the food would be the same! I think it would be the most cultural-food experience of a lifetime.

Anorexic

This is quite the sensitive topic to a lot of people, though I feel it's one I need to address. It is food-related, so it's not out of place, and it has affected my life personally. This is what a blog is used for, right?

Over a year ago, I was still living with my mom, younger brother and step-dad. There were a lot of difficulties in that household, but most I didn't understand at the time, or even acknowledge. What I did realize though, was that my mom wasn't eating. A year or so later it makes much more sense. We learned that she was severely depressed among other things, and needed some help turning her life around.

My brother at the time was around the age of ten, and even if I had explained eating disorders to him he wouldn't have understood it as well. He was actually the first to notice, asking our mom if she was going to eat with us after she made our supper, to which she started replying no. We noticed she started to lose weight, but since we both were at school all day, we never knew if she was eating. Sooner or later, when we realized that something had to be done, and clued in that she really wasn't eating at all, we confronted her.

At supper time my brother would force her to eat something with us, however small of a meal.

Top 5 Favourite Fast Food Restuarants

Though I know fast food isn't always the BEST option, it certainly is a part of my life at some time or another! These are my favourites:

1. McDonald's

There's only one reason I love McDonald's so much, and that's their Big Mac. I swear it's all a scam, because they are way too addicting. I get cravings for a Big Mac, and when I finally get my "fix" it's just too tasty! It must be that special sauce of theirs.

2. Taco Bell

Haven't you learned by now? I love Mexican food! Even though in erality their menu is nothing like any I saw in Mexico, the food is still really, really good. I'm a big fan of their fries supreme with ground beef, tomatoes, sour cream and cheese!

My favourite thing about Taco Bell is their hot sauce packets. I love my food spicy, but the little saying they have on them just make my day!

3. Wendy's

Wendy's makes a mean salad! My favourite is the spicy chicken caesar salad. Caesar dressing is by far my favourite, and spicy just makes it even better. I love a crisp, fresh salad with grilled chicken and a ton of croutons, mhmm.

Also, Wendy's is the home of the Baconator! Or when i'm a little less hungry, the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger. I love both, cheese and bacon, what's not to like? I always feel full and satisfied after leaving this place. Another bonus about this place is their new french fries made with sea salt. I've only tried them once, but I was impressed.

4. Quiznos

Sadly, i've only ever eaten at Quiznos once! But it was an amazing experience, and i've been dying to go back for another taste. I ate a flatbread bruschetta-style pizza, and it was complete perfection. It was hot, fresh and above all tasty. I love bruschetta bread so much, and on their flatbread it's beyond amazing. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

5. A&W

A&W isn't my favourite, but i'm never disappointed. It's on my top five because I love their root beer, it's a classic! Their chicken is always hot and so tender, too. You can't go wrong.

Picky Eaters

This is, most definitely, my biggest pet peeve. Ever.

If you don't like eating something, that's fine... but when you hardly like eating anything? That's a problem. Recently I've had to come to terms with this problem as someone important in my life seems to be the pickiest of the picky, only eating something fried, or with the word cheese in it. They like pizza, (with no other toppings besides pepperoni and cheese!) grilled cheese, bologna and chicken fingers. Wheres the creativity? The variety? Isn't variety the spice of life?

No need to panic, though! I'm quite persistent and lately they've been trying new foods, like tacos for example! I wasn't surprised when they actually really, really enjoyed them! It's a joy to open up the wonderful world of food for someone else, slowly but surely!

Christmas Baking!

My grocery list was long... Flour, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, butter, and milk. Cranberries, glazed cherries, macadamia nuts, almonds. Chocolate, peanut butter and marshmallows... and that's only the beginning!

I love Christmas for many reasons, but the most prominent, the one that comes to mind first is quite simply baking Christmas 'goodies'. For many reasons! It's sort of becoming a tradition, or I hope it will be, since my mom is the one who taught me. She would bake for an entire week before making platters, trays and tins full of the chocolaty, minty wonders for friends, family and neighbours. I would help her, and bring some to school for friends! This year, I had to do it alone, but that didn't stop me! I baked for an entire week, making everything from gingersnaps to shortbread, and I enjoyed every second of it!

My grandparents also enjoyed it, coming home to freshly baked treats waiting for them, and the warm, inviting smell of a kitchen that's being used well! By the looks on my friend's faces, i'd have to say they enjoyed it too. Isn't that the point of Christmas, spreading joy and all that? Well this is my way of doing it, though I may have gained a few pounds in the process!

Dear Onion

Dear Onion,

You may think I'm crying because I grieve for you, feel sorry for the pain you endure, but just the sight of you makes me want to cry! Even worse, your smell! Sure, rinsing my blade under some cold tap water might fight back the tears for a little while as I try to dice you into tiny pieces, but not long enough. Sooner or later tears always stream down my face, and  they're definitely not out of pity! I'm glad to see you gone. Cut up. Sliced and diced. Really, the world is a better place without you! I just wanted you to know I'm not crying for you. My eyes sting, but if anything, they're tears of joy. Goodbye Onion!

Sincerely, Master Chef

The harsh, putrid smell that makes my eyes burn and water.
Their slimy feel as I try to swallow them.
Quite simply, the disgusting taste.

These are the reasons that first pop into my mind when I think of the foul vegetable: onions. Just the thought sends a shiver of disgust up my spine. I've never liked them, and I've come to the conclusion that I never will. I've tried a lot of food during my short life, and I am usually quite daring in what I will eat, but if there's chunks of onions... they're coming out.

Normally i'm annoyed to no end when people pick apart their food. It's made purposely to go together, for the tastes to blend, to be in harmony. Call me a hypocrite, I don't care. Onions have no right being in anything I eat. In my opinion, they should be forced extinct, somehow!

Introduction

After my trip to Mexico, my eyes were opened to a whole new world, my life was changed forever. Eating food from another country made me experience culture in an entirely different way. I have always had a passion for food, but my appreciation for it only expanded after I experienced food from a different part of the world, a different culture.

Ever since, i've had the desire to travel the world, tasting cuisine from everywhere - to have complete knowledge of food from every corner of the Earth, Mexico sparked my ambition for that.

Unfortunately, I am still only a high school student and I won't be leaving the country anytime soon. For now, I can only blog and rant about the food in my life right now, or anything else related to reaching my dream.
